Here is my very first website that I built in 2005 and owned for a few years. Someone else owns it now, but sadly, they haven't done anything much with it since. It taught me all about web building, SEO, funnel building, and building a profitable mailing list.
At the time, I was already a copywriter, but this was a great platform to hone my skills. I was, and still am, proud of this website today, purely for everything it taught me.
Since then, I have built over 100 websites for myself and clients.
Hi. I'm John.
I've spent 20+ years figuring out what makes people click, buy, and trust... all because someone changed seven words.
Started with face-to-face sales (milk, cars, water filters... yes, really). Learned SEO before Google had a rulebook. Got obsessed with human psychology after reading about an envelope from 1928 that made an extra $72,000 in today's money.
These days? I build Custom AI tools, SEO strategies, and content systems for businesses that want results, not excuses.
Let's see if we're a good fit.
Where This All Started (The Envelope Story)
1928. Some clever marketer is staring at an envelope.
You know that bit where it says "Stick Stamp Here"?
He rips it out and replaces it with:
"A penny here will bring back dollars."
Seven words. Same envelope. Same audience. Same everything.
Except this version pulled in an extra $4,000 in sales.
That's roughly $72,000 in today's money.
I read that story and got hooked. Words... tiny changes... they move people in ways we don't always see coming.
That's human psychology. That's marketing. That's the game I've been playing ever since.
The Sales Years
Turned out I was pretty good at selling face-to-face.
B2B. B2C. Cold calling. Door knocking. Phone systems. Cars. Milk. Oil. Water filters.
(Yes, I know it's a strange mix. Who goes from milk to cars? But brilliant training nonetheless.)
Here's what those years taught me:
People rarely tell you the real reason they're hesitating.
They'll give you surface-level objections. Price. Timing. "I need to think about it."
But the real reason? That's buried deeper.
Sometimes I'd answer their question before they even asked it. The look on their faces... pure surprise. Bit creepy, probably. But effective.
I learned to listen for the thing behind the thing.
Made more mistakes than I can count. Some properly embarrassing. The kind that make you wince years later when you're trying to fall asleep.
But those mistakes taught me more than any course ever could.
Times change. Technology changes. The world changes. People never do.
That's the marketing lesson that stuck with me forever.
The Early Internet Days (Back When SEO Was the Wild West)
Around the same time, I built a health website. Got multiple pages ranking on Google's first page.
This was 20+ years ago. No rulebook. No "best practices." Just experimenting, watching what worked, doing more of that.
SEO back then was a different beast. You could get away with things that would get you laughed at today. Or penalised. Probably both.
I spent years learning what actually moves the needle.
Not the tricks. Not the hacks that stop working after Google's next update.
The fundamentals that survive algorithm changes.
How search intent really works. Why some content ranks and other content... doesn't.
These days, I blend old-school SEO knowledge with how people actually search now.
Voice search. AI search. Half-formed questions typed into boxes at weird hours.
It's all shifting fast, but the core psychology hasn't changed.
People still want answers. You just have to meet them where they are.
Then AI Happened
Went down the rabbit hole and never climbed out. Still waiting to pop my head over the parapet.
Prompt design. Custom GPT builds. AI workflows that actually save time instead of creating more work.
Here's what I noticed...
Most businesses are using AI like a fancy autocomplete. They're copy-pasting generic prompts from YouTube and getting mediocre results.
Meanwhile, the smart ones are building Custom AI tools trained on their specific business.
Tools that understand their voice, their customers, their industry quirks.
Tools that turn 8-hour tasks into 45-minute tasks.
And that, folks, is where I come in.
I build Custom GPTs that actually solve real problems, not just tech demos you show off at conferences.
And because I understand SEO, copywriting, and human psychology, these tools don't just work... they work in a way that drives traffic, conversions, and revenue.
What I've Actually Done (Proof, Not Promises)
Anyone can say they're good at this stuff. Let me show you instead:
A content agency came to me, spending six hours on every brief... their senior writer was basically doing admin with a thesaurus. So, I built them a Custom GPT that does it in 30 minutes.
Conversion rate up 34% in eight weeks. That's what happened when I rewrote an e-commerce brand's product descriptions using the same stuff I learned selling cars face-to-face. I just applied it all to a screen instead of a showroom.
Then there was a local service business stuck on page 3 for their main keywords. Built them an SEO strategy, got them to page 1, and the enquiries followed. They actually had to promote someone internally just to keep up with the work coming in.
A coach I work with used to dread writing emails. Properly dread them... the kind of dread where you open the laptop, stare at the screen, then suddenly decide the kitchen needs a deep clean. I created an AI email copywriter for her that writes promotional emails in her exact voice. She went from sending one email a quarter to weekly, and her list stopped shrinking.
I've built tons of websites. Launched projects that never made it past beta. Grabbed more domain names than I care to admit.
Some see the light of day. Most don't. That's just how it goes.
But the ones that work? They work bloody well.
What I Actually Do (And Who It's For)
Primary Focus: Custom AI Tools That Save You Ridiculous Amounts of Time
If you're spending hours on repetitive tasks... content creation, keyword research, email writing, customer FAQs... I can build you a Custom GPT that handles it.
No generic ChatGPT slop or copy-pasted prompts. Forget tricks and hacks that die with the next Google update.
But a properly trained AI tool that understands YOUR business and works in YOUR voice.
Perfect for: Content agencies, e-commerce brands, coaches, consultants, anyone drowning in repetitive tasks.
I Also Help With:
SEO Strategy
I've been doing this since Google was basically a library catalogue with attitude. Twenty-plus years of watching algorithms come and go, and the fundamentals haven't changed as much as people think. I build search strategies that survive updates... not tactics that expire the moment Google sneezes.
Copywriting & Funnel Psychology
Years of selling face-to-face taught me something most copywriters never learn. People don't buy when you tell them to. They buy when you remove the thing that's stopping them. I once rewrote a single landing page headline for a client and it doubled their enquiries in a fortnight. Same page, same traffic, same offer. Different seven words. Sound familiar?
Digital Strategy
This one's simple. Your SEO, your copy, and your funnels need to talk to each other instead of fighting. I had a client spending £3k a month driving traffic to a landing page that converted like a wet paper bag. We didn't need more traffic. We needed the page to stop leaking. Fixed that first, and suddenly the budget made sense.
How I Actually Work (No Rookies, No Runaround)
You won't get palmed off to a junior account manager who barely understands your business.
You deal with me, personally. Support is an email or phone call away.
I'm patient with teams. I'm transparent with budgets. If something won't work, I'll say it plainly. If something can work, I'll show you the simplest path.
I'm a perfectionist in the sense that I keep tinkering until the work feels right. Not perfect. Just right.
Sometimes that means rewriting a prompt at midnight. Sometimes it means simplifying something that looked impressive but didn't help anyone.
Turns out fancy doesn't always mean useful. Who knew?
I care about the outcome. I care about the people trusting me with their business.
And here's the thing... I can't work with everyone. I truly believe I can't help some people. But I'll give them valuable advice, and we both move on.
Life's too short for bad fits.
What People Say After Working With Me
"John built us a Custom GPT that has now changed how we create content. What used to take our team about 5-8 hours now takes less than 45 minutes. We've cut downour output without hiring anyone new."
— Sarah, Content Agency Owner
"I was sceptical about AI replacing our copywriting process. John showed us how to use it as a tool, not a replacement. Our email campaigns now convert 40% better, and I actually enjoy writing them again."
— Mat, Carpentry Business Owner
"The SEO strategy John built for us is still working two years later, despite multiple Google updates. He focuses on fundamentals, not hacks. That's rare."
— Lisa, Service Business Owner
My Philosophy (Keep It Stupid, Simple)
Everyone loves overcomplicating things. I don't.
Keep it stupid, simple.
Yeah, you read that right... stupid, simple. Grammar pedants will notice it's backwards. Good. They're already overthinking it.
Here's what works:
Help people first.
Give them proper value, and they won't bat an eyelid when you ask for something in return.
That's it. That's the whole game. AI writes words. It does well, actually.
But it can't build strategies. It can't look at your business and translate your goals into search visibility. It can't audit your site and tell you what matters most.
That takes someone who's spent years figuring this stuff out. You'll struggle to swap me out for a chatbot. Or some lame prompt you found online.
Want to See If We're a Good Fit?
Here's how this works:
Step 1: Click the button below and complete a few questions.
Step 2: We'll talk about what you're working on, what's eating your time, and whether I can actually help.
Step 3: If I think I can help, I'll tell you exactly what that looks like and what it costs. If I can't help, I'll tell you honestly and point you in the right direction... fair?
No sales pitch. No pressure. Just clarity.
One Last Thing...
I've lost count of the apps and tools I've built. I've launched projects that never made it past beta. Grabbed more domain names than I care to admit.
Most failed. Some spectacularly.
But each one taught me something about what actually works.
And here's what I've learned after 20+ years:
Fanciest tech doesn't win. The biggest budget doesn't win. Knowing your customers better than they know themselves... that wins. It always has.
AI is just another tool in that toolkit. A bloody powerful one. But still just a tool.
The magic isn't in the AI. It's in knowing how to use it.
That's what I bring to the table.
If that sounds like what you need, let's talk.
P.S. Still on the fence?
Fair enough.
Email me with your biggest challenge right now.
I'll reply personally (not an AI... yet) with at least one idea you can use, whether we work together or not.
Help first. That's how this works.
